Kelly Shepherd

I grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia graduating from a local private high school, Virginia Episcopal School, in 1994. Though my love of writing stories and drawing started as a very young child, it was the passionate teachers and excellent education that I received at VES that truly sparked a fire for wanting to be a writer and illustrator.

From 1994 through 1998, I attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado earning a BA in English with a concentration on Creative Writing.

Several years after returning to the east coast, I began working on my Masters degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia earning a Masters in Teaching English in 2003.

After teaching school for four years and finding out along the way that perhaps teaching was not for me, I worked in a variety of different professional fields in the years to follow. I began spending much of my spare time painting, drawing, writing, making jewelry, and crafting just about anything and everything. One day it dawned on me that perhaps my hobbies could become the career I had always been seeking.

In 2008, Just Arting Around, LLC was born with me as founder and CEO. I wanted a company that would not limit my artist interests to just one medium. For now, Just Arting Around, LLC is predominately focused on publishing my children's books, but I hope to expand into other arts and craft areas in the near future.

I currently reside in Fort Collins, Colorado with my husband and our twins. I have been a stay at home mother since 2010 when my children were born. I have been passionately working on Helen Hippo's Big Move for the past six years.

Since my children were born, I have read so many children's books to them and am thrilled to add one of my very own stories to their bookshelf and hopefully yours.

Andrew Hembd

Andrew Hembd (b. 1980, Sioux City, IA) was born and raised in Iowa. He moved to Colorado in 2002, and has resided in Fort Collins ever since. He graduated from Colorado State University in the Fall of 2012, with a BFA in Painting. While working at a local restaurant for over the past 10 years, he paints, sells, and displays his work in Denver and the Northern Colorado area.

When Kelly Shepherd shared her idea for the book "A Dog Day At The Beach" and showed her interest in having him illustrate, Andrew saw a great opportunity to help create this charming dog adventure. He enjoyed working on it and hopes that it shows in his illustrations. You can see more of his work on his website at http://www.andrewhembdart.com/
